Update – Enrollment & Transfer Policy News

Concerned Richmond families,

Thank you to everyone who attended Monday night’s community meeting regarding enrollment & transfer policy changes being recommended next week to PPS Board of Directors. There was fantastic Richmond representation at the meeting and our concern was evident.

The committee charged with evaluating enrollment and transfer policies is SACET (Superintendent’s Advisory Committee for Enrollment and Transfer).

What’s Happening Next:

1 – SACET and the Superintendent will introduce these policies to the PPS Board of Directors, Monday, November 10th, 6:30pm, at BESC.  This meeting is open to the public.  Unfortunately, this falls on a holiday weekend, so many families will be out of town.  If you are in town and available to attend, PLEASE try to attend.  A strong Richmond presence is vital to getting our voices heard.  (**At 8:59am, the RIchmond administration sent an email to the PPS Board of Directors inquiring whether there will be an opportunity for public comment at the November 10th Board Meeting.  They are still waiting for a response.)

2 –  Soon after SACET introduces the proposed policies to the PPS Board, the Superintendent will decide which of the committee’s recommendations she will forward to the Board for decision. The PPS Board will vote on whether or not to adopt these policies before the end of the calendar year.  However, no specific date of the vote has been released, nor opportunities for public comment determined to date.

What you can do now:

1- Please download the full report and become familiar with the recommendations.

2 –  Contact the PPS Board of Directors THIS WEEK.  Write a letter or send an email.  Our community’s best hope of preventing the adoption of these policies is to send a loud, clear passionate message that they will have negative consequences for our school and our families.

3 – Attend the November 10th meeting.  We need a HUGE turn out to send a loud and clear message that these policies are extremely problematic, and require more intensive research, public input, and analysis.  Because it is a holiday weekend many folks will be out of town. PLEASE, if you can attend this meeting, go.

4 – Be assertive and respectful.  It is important to share your opinions in a manner that does not attack or demean, so we may be heard.

5 – PTA has provided a response to the recommendations (link below) that you should read as you write emails and letters, so that we may respond with a clear and consistent message.
