Emergency Preparedness Presentation September 15th 6:30-8:30 PM

Have natural disasters like wildfires and hurricanes got you thinking more about your own level of emergency preparedness? Emergencies can catch anyone off guard but the more you know about a potential hazard the better you can be at preparing for it. Experts agree that the Pacific Northwest is due for a massive subduction zone earthquake. We can expect power outages, no phone service, and no clean water. Our roads and bridges will be impassable. Just as we saw with Hurricane Harvey, our first responders and government agencies will be overwhelmed at first. Past events suggest that most people in need of help will be rescued by their neighbors and that the best way for communities to develop resiliency is to be prepared.

WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW? Get to know your neighbors; talk about earthquake preparedness; practice earthquake drills with your kids; make a household communication plan.Involving your family and friends in preparedness is one way to make the idea of an emergency like an earthquake less scary. Visit our website http://www.richmondptapdx.com/ for Five Simple Steps to Preparedness (geared for families with school aged kids) that you can get everyone involved in. Even taking a few simple steps toward earthquake preparedness can help you weather other emergencies such as power outages, ice storms and more.

WANT TO KNOW MORE? The Richmond and Sunnyside PTA Emergency Preparedness Committees are teaming up to bring you guest speakers from PCC and Multnomah County to guide you through what to expect in a large earthquake and how to prepare. Invite your friends and neighbors. We’re all in this together. Childcare will be available. Friday September 15th, 6:30-8:30 PM, Richmond Elementary School 2276 SE 41st Ave.

GUEST SPEAKERS:

Chris Voss – Multnomah County Office of Emergency Management

Laura Hall – Portland Community College, Parents for Preparedness

In addition, we will be taking orders for a bulk purchase of pre-used, rinsed, food-grade 55-gallon emergency water storage barrels ($30 each) to be delivered to Richmond in late October (home delivery available for an additional $5).

We hope you can join us on the 15th to learn about the need to be prepared and what you can do to prepare at home, school, work, and in your neighborhood.

Brought to you by: Richmond PTA, Sunnyside PTA
